Four constituent countries– England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland– make up the United Kingdom, or to be more accurate, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The history of the United Kingdom predates the Neolithic period and it is long and complex, to say the least. British politics is stained by a history of colonization and is complicated and continues to be. It is a land of great natural beauty– soaring cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea, meandering rivers, placid lakes, wind-swept moors, and spectacular glens– the United Kingdom has inspired writers and poets since time immemorial.

“The land of embarrassment and breakfast.”

Julian Barnes
