Not only is the East Neuk of Fife undeniably scenic, it also has some of the finest food in Scotland. At the best places to eat in the East Neuk of Fife, you can taste sustainably caught seafood, pasture-fed and traditionally reared meat, and locally-grown organic produce.

East Neuk, Fife | Scotland

Just north of Edinburgh is the historic Kingdom of Fife, and nestled at its eastern corner (dotted with charming fishing villages, idyllic harbours, and rolling hills) is the East Neuk of Fife. Thanks to its proximity to the waters and its abundance of farmlands, the East Neuk produces some of Scotland’s finest foods. You can indulge in the best fish n’ chips on Scotland’s east coast here in the East Neuk of Fife! Seafood restaurants and fine-dining places dot the coastline. Here, you can relish some of the nation’s freshest lobsters and crabs, langoustines, mussels, and more. Inland, there are farms specialising in seasonal produce and sustainably-reared animals. The likes of Ardross Farm and Balcaskie (you can join their Grass to Grill trip to learn more about their farm) are committed to organic produce. We visited the farm shop at Ardross Farm and the quality of the produce, the freshness are enough to make you shop a bagful to bring home. Everywhere that we ate in the East Neuk of Fife, the food was of the highest quality. In the East Neuk of Fife, you can indeed taste the best of the Scottish larder. If you love to partake in all things gastronomic, the East Neuk is an absolutely must-visit. Read to find out about some of the best places to eat in Fife.

Best Places to Eat in St. Monans

Bowhouse Market

Held on the second weekend of each month (except January and February), the Bowhouse Market is your one-stop shop for all things local to Fife and one of the best places to eat in the East Neuk of Fife. They describe themselves as ” a place for transforming raw ingredients from Fife into produce ready for everyone to enjoy at our regular Market Weekends.” Expect organic produce, homemade cakes and cookies, artisan brews, small-batch charcuterie, vegan kimchi, and a plethora of other gourmet edibles. They also have a superb street food line-up featuring some of Scotland’s most popular food trucks. On the week that we visited, Choola was dishing up mouth-watering Nepalese fare including my favourite momos slathered in hot sauce, and Screaming Peacock was serving pheasant and venison burgers which were selling like hot cakes. Besides food, there are craft stalls selling various items from jaw-dropping stationery to Instagrammable candles. If you could do one and only one thing in Fife, visit the Bowhouse Market. For dates, check their website.

BÆRN

Located within the courtyard at Bowhouse is the impeccable Baern Cafe where you can indulge in a host of inventive baked goods made of seasonal produce. But that’s not all. They also serve breakfast and lunch and their menu is a delicious treasure of all things local and seasonal. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for collabs and dinner series. If you are into all things local and gastronomic, you can’t miss them!

Futtle Brewery

Futtle Brewery makes “fully organic, farmhouse, foraged and wild beers, alongside our small batch, seasonal house spirits and ferments.” Never have I ever stepped into a shop and been completely in awe of their selection. Besides their own brews, Futtle stocks an extraordinary selection of wild ciders and natural wines, including the very on-trend orange wine, sourced from across Europe. Agree that they are a tad pricier than your usual pint, but gosh! what a brilliant selection!

East Pier Smokehouse

No list of the best places to eat in the East Neuk of Fife can be complete without a mention of East Pier Smokehouse. Located smack on the St. Monans harbour and commanding lovely views of the Forth, East Pier Smokehouse serves fresh, locally sourced seafood. The seafood menu changes frequently depending on the catch but expect dishes like hot-smoked sea bass, beetroot-cured salmon, crab croquetas, and langoustines. Also on the menu are Scottish classics such as sirloin steak and duck.

The Giddy Gannet

Another fantastic place to eat in Fife is the Giddy Gannet, a cute coffee shop serving a fantastic selection of tray bakes, including gluten-free options, and the most delicious cinnamon buns. Come for the coffee, but stay for breakfast. Order cakes and sandwiches– their hot smoked salmon sandwich was an absolutely hit with Aninda– and spend a lazy morning at the Giddy Gannet. In summer, the venue moonlights as a wine bar on the weekends. If you are staying late in St. Monans to see the psychedelic sunset skies of Fife, you have no excuse but to drop by!

Best Places to Eat in Pittenweem

Located in Pittenweem, Dory Bistro is quickly becoming one of the best places to eat in the East Neuk of Fife. Popular with both locals and visitors to Fife, their menu heavily features seafood that they buy right off the boat from the harbour at Pittenweem, so you can be assured that you are indulging in the freshest, most delectable Scottish seafood. Also on the menu are Scottish meat and game dishes and a few vegetarian options. Don’t miss the Dory-cured catch of the day or their specials!

The West End Bar

The West End Bar is the perfect stop for a pub lunch. Enjoy some homemade fare with a pint or two of locally brewed beers. Sadly, we were too late for lunch but we spent a lovely few hours trying some local beers and single malts after a long walk along the Fife Coastal Path. The owner is absolutely lovely and you can meet some of Pittenweem’s friendly locals here.

Chip Ahoy @ Larachmhor

Chip Ahoy is really your neighbourhood chippy and serves fuss-free flavourful chippy fare. We ordered chicken kebabs and a king rib and ate on a bench outside as daylight faded and the skies took on shades of purple and pink. Chip Ahoy also has a bar and a restaurant where you can sit down for a meal. They are also open late which is always a plus!

Best Places to Eat in Anstruther

Anstruther Fish Bar

The Anstruther Fish Bar is an institution! There’s not been an award that this chippy hasn’t won. This was Prince William’s takeaway of choice when he studied at nearby St. Andrews. No doubt the fish supper was delicious– the fish was fresh and the crumbed batter light and flavourful– but queueing in the hot sun for a full 20 minutes kind of drained away our appetite.

The Wee Chippy

We might be courting controversy here but we did like the battered fish at the Wee Chippy more than that of their more famous neighbour. The batter was lighter and more flavourful and the fish itself was tastier. Agree we had to queue here too but it was faster and better managed. Undoubtedly, it is one of the best places to eat in Fife!

HELLO READER: Chippies in Fife are being forced to down their shutters due to rising costs. If you are visiting Fife, buy a meal at a chippy. It might be a drop in the sea but it will certainly help keep these neighbourhood institutions alive.

Best Places to Eat in Crail

Reilly’s Shellfish

This summer-only shack on Crail harbour is one of the best places to eat in Fife. Reilly’s Shellfish serves some of the freshest, most delectable lobster and crabs. We went for a crab roll and it was as delicious as you could dream of. The roll was buttery soft and the crab filling, nourished with more butter, was sweet and generous. They also serve grilled lobsters and even the thought of them, buttery sweet with just a dash of lemon, makes my mouth water. Be warned that they are cash-only, so keep some handy.

The Crail Harbour Gallery and Tearoom serves lunch with a view. On a sunny day, settle down at one of their outdoor tables and dig into some pillowy soft pancakes (like me) or homemade soup or curries or sandwiches and enjoy a joyful meal.

Shoregate

Shoregate serves modern Scottish fare. On the menu are Scottish produce such as salmon, Scrabster cod, grouse, and chateaubriand. The Shoregate is vegetarian-friendly and their dishes often showcase the best of seasonal produce.

Best Places to Eat in Elie

The Ship Inn

The Ship Inn in Elie is one of the most popular places to eat in Fife. Located right by the waters, overlooking Elie’s sweeping sandy beach, the Ship Inn serves Scottish pub classics such as beer-battered fish, ale pies, and steak. For an elevated experience, order the scallops or the whole roasted seabass, and finish off with some sticky toffee pudding.
