In Scotland, you can find some of the world’s tastiest seafood and the wee island of Gigha is no exception. Here are the best places to eat on the Isle of Gigha.

Isle of Gigha | Scotland

Located just three miles west of Kintyre is the lovely Isle of Gigha where you can eat some of the freshest Scottish seafood and locally made award-winning dairy and ice creams. Surrounded by pristine Atlantic waters, Gigha is the perfect place for food lovers, especially those who appreciate fresh Scottish seafood. The island’s waters are home to a variety of seafood, from succulent scallops to tender mussels, and the renowned Gigha oysters that are celebrated for their exceptional flavour and are coveted items on menus across the country!

As you know, we love a good scran and therefore we spent our days nibbling and munching around the island. On our trip to the Isle of Gigha, we were treated to fantastic dining experiences, all centered around the island’s freshest seafood. From getting a takeaway from a quaint café or indulging in a fancy restaurant experience, we can be sure that the seafood we’re tasting has been caught just off the island’s coast. From traditional fish and chips to gourmet seafood platters, Gigha’s restaurants showcase the best of Scottish cuisine, often with a modern twist. Not just seafood, Gigha’s eateries also feature produce sourced from the Scottish Islands and also locally foraged produced.

The Nook

If you looking for a reason to visit Gigha, this is it! The Nook really is the best place to eat on Gigha. We will return to Gigha to eat at the Nook again and again! It is not often that you find a takeaway that serves seafood so fresh and at unimaginably reasonable prices. We ate there thrice and every meal was memorable. They are only open for lunch and the menu changes daily depending on the day’s catch. If you are visiting on the weekends, make sure to beat the crowds to the counter for they sell out at lightning speed. The Nook is a favourite for both islanders and visitors. We ate at the Nook multiple times and had the most flavourful crayfish cocktail, a delightfully spicy prawn bap, the best octopus tacos ever, a lobster sandwich that I simply can’t forget, and a gigantic beer-battered haddock. The haddock was literally the length of Aninda’s arm and the chips were perfect! The food at the Nook is undoubtedly the best! Check out their Facebook page for daily specials.

Get some sodas or beer from Ardminish Store next door and have a picnic on the beach. For dessert, there is always the fabulous Wee Isle ice cream (Mocha and Irish Cream are our favourite flavours!). For those interested in hyperlocal culinary souvenirs, Ardminish Store stocks the local Isle of Gigha coastal gin distilled by the Beinn Au Turic distillers.

The Boathouse

One of the best places to eat on Gigha, the Boathouse sits right by the waters of Ardminish Bay and draws discerning eaters from all over the country. Their food is so good that they have gained recognition from the Michelin Guide for five years running! Much like the fabulous Canna Cafe on the scenic Isle of Canna, the menu at the Boathouse is designed around fresh seafood that they source from the West Coast and locally grown produce. It is a little pricey and if you plan to eat here, book well ahead as they fill up fast, especially during the weekends (much to the disappointment of locals, we hear). We had a grilled lobster which was deliciously sweet, a pan-roasted Gigha halibut, roe-deer carpaccio, and some plump queenies from Loch Fyne. If you looking for the famed Gigha oysters, this is the place to be! However, be warned that they sell out fast. For dessert, we shared a sublime pannacotta. It was a superb meal!

Looking for vegetarian or vegan food on the Isle of Gigha? Not to worry as the Boathouse always has a few items on the menu that cater to vegetarians and vegans. Check out the unique Jackfruit Ceviche or their Salt-baked Celeriac.

Wee Isle Cafe

Gigha’s newest offering is the Wee Isle Cafe where you can spend hours gorging on farm-fresh eggs fried sunny-side up (never have I seen egg yolks that are such a brilliant and vibrant colour) and buttery rolls stuffed with locally-made sausages, black puddings, and more. Locally made and absolutely moreish! They also serve milkshakes made with the award-winning Wee Isle Dairy’s milk. We had to give those a wide berth, thanks to our lactose-intolerant gut, but we did a fair bit of staring at the tall glasses brimming with velvety milkshakes that everybody around us seemed to be enjoying. And don’t forget their rich, absolutely delicious ice cream: they serve both traditional and experimental flavours and you will keep coming back for more! We couldn’t resist and threw caution to the wind and ate a few tiny tubs. They were indeed some of the finest ice creams we have ever eaten! In fact, they were so good that we asked if they had any stockists in Edinburgh!

Honesty Boxes

There are quite a few honesty boxes on the Isle of Gigha but nothing beats the pale blue cabinet stocked with the most delicious cakes and other baked goodies. It is not technically an eatery really but we can’t leave it out of the list of the best places to eat on Gigha, can we? You can buy delicious homemade cakes, tablets, and other sweet treats. Their toffee loaf and the walnut loaf are unforgettable! So good that I regretted not bringing back a dozen more loaves to Edinburgh. Don’t miss it and make sure to have some cash handy!
