Best Places to Eat in York

Here are our favourite places to eat in York.

Bluebird

Bluebird Bakery, walls in bright blue, stands in a corner of the Shambles. Over the past decade it has become a beloved name in the Yorkshire baking world. The place began its humble journey as a home-based operation. Today, it has expanded to multiple physical stores across several cities (York, Leeds, and Malton) – each one a testament to its commitment to quality and the deliciousness of their products. The Shambles Market branch, while offering a takeaway-only service, is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Their breads often sell out quickly, and long queues ensue, so make sure you come here early. The bakery’s signature style, characterized by long fermentation and a complete avoidance of preservatives, results in bread that is not only delicious but also incredibly healthy. Their artisanal bread, with its complex flavours and satisfying chew, has garnered a loyal following. They also sell different kinds of chili and garlic infused oils as well, which looked extremely nice. During our visit, we tried their Bengali-style five-spiced pasty, a unique and flavorful treat. The pastry was flaky and buttery, while the filling was a delightful blend of spices, perfectly balanced and incredibly satisfying

Cosgriff & Sons

If you are in York, wake up in the morning, and just walk on over to Cosgriff and Sons, one of the best breakfast spots in town. Not only is it a nice walk before the hustle starts to bustle, but you can also time your visit just as the fine folks from Cosgriff start lining their shelves with their freshly baked goodies. It’s a family-run business, with Paul Cosgriff, a former chef, at the helm. They are known for their high-quality, artisanal bread and pastries and is frequented by the discerning locals. The location at Tower Street, being slightly away from the touristy centre works to our advantage. Make no mistake, it’s popular enough to not be a hidden gem, but has ample breathing room and is not as congested as some of the other places that are more in vogue. We had a bacon and cinnamon swirl, still warm, and it was one of the highlights of our York eats. Indulgent, comforting, and a delicate balance of the sweet and the salty – on par with the finest baked items anywhere in the world.

Spring Espresso

While there is no dearth of decent cafes in York, we found Spring Espresso to be a place that all coffee geeks kept recommending. Winner of multiple awards over the last decade, we can confirm that their coffee is really good, very aromatic, and full of flavour. Not just coffee though, Spring’s food options are also something to look out for. Their stack of breakfast pancakes is a thing of decadent beauty. A pillowy, fluffy tower of syrup laden pancakes studded with fresh berries and jewelled slices of fruit are just the thing to take care of your sugar cravings. The muffins and breakfast sarnies are also on point. Frequented by locals and tourists alike, you know a place is good if all the tables are almost always full, be it morning or afternoon. Spring espresso has a couple of locations in York, and we only tried the Fossgate branch, but I’ve kept their loyalty card safely tucked in my wallet for a future visit!

York Roast Co.

We did not know that wrapping your traditional Sunday roast in a giant Yorkshire pudding, and then having it on the go was a thing. When we found out, it seemed to be the most sensible thing to do, especially so because we do enjoy our Kathi rolls. The York Roast Co. is a popular restaurant chain, who does this exact thing, and manages to do it really nicely. They offer a variety of roast-inspired dishes, including their famous Yorkshire Pudding Wrap, which went viral and has been featured on TikToks and TV shows. A careful perusal of the menu lets us know that we can choose from a variety of options – The Yorkypud Wrap is filled with roast meat, roasted vegetables, and gravy, all wrapped in a giant Yorkshire pudding.  The Classic Roast is keeping up with the traditional roast dinner and includes all the trimmings, including roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and gravy. One can customise and take things in and out of their wrap. The Naked Roast is a lighter version of the classic roast, without the Yorkshire pudding, while The Veggie Roast is vegetarian option with roasted vegetables, stuffing, and gravy. It is genuinely tasty, but also a very fun experience to make a walking meal out of a sit-down tradition.

YORK ON A FORK: If you are short on time, consider joining the York on a Fork food tour led by none other than a York-based food writer who is also a part of the York Food and Drinks Festival. Sample local Yorkshire cheese, try fish & chips at a family-run chippy, enjoy tacos and pintxos, and get to hear from local artisans and food producers. Highly recommend!

Shambles Kitchen

We love food markets be it the Grainger Market in Newcastle or the Arndale Market in Manchester! Shambles Kitchen is one of the best places to eat in York and as you can see from the images we have clicked, the sandwiches at Shambles Kitchen are gigantic extravaganzas. Not only they are delicious and filling, watching how they are made and assembled is a lesson in how to do food theatrics done right. The kitchen folks smoke the different meats (brisket, pulled pork, and much more) in-house and pile them in top grade artisanal bread. The warmth of the bread meshes in with the meaty umami of the pastrami, the pulled pork collar, or the beef barbacoa, and produces a gorgeous bite. I loved how voluminous these sandwiches were – things you can truly munch on and keep on going for a few fair minutes. It’s a well thought out menu, and looking at the crowd – it is both well tested and well tasted. Lunchtimes get really busy, so our advice would be to either line up early, or keep around twenty minutes away. They will put up a show, and you won’t be disappointed.

Shambles Pie

Good pies are hard to come by, no matter how much you cry. The Shambles Sausage and Pie Company, we are happy to attest, are good pie people. They open early, they sell out early, but those in between hours are a great time for a pie-lover. The pork pies are devilishly good, baked daily, made with responsibly sourced ingredients, and follow a traditional recipe. Moreover, they are not afraid to experiment; you have the haggis pies, and the black pudding pies, and the steak pies, and the mince pies, and many permutations and combinations of them. All encased in beautiful flakey crust – that tastes beautiful and gives off a savoury buttery aroma. If you are in Shambles (or even in York) a must try place – come here, eat a few hot as they come fresh off the oven, and carry a few away so that you can have them in leisure, later. Truly affordable luxuries, and great to have as a snack on your train ride back.

Phranakhon

We were trying to keep our York city-centre eats limited to street vendors and cafes, actively trying to not fall into the trap of sit-down meals at established restaurants and go through the pain of trying to find a booking at such a busy part of the city. However, we looked at Phranakhon’s menu and had to make an exception. One of the highlights of Phranakhon is their creative approach to Thai cuisine. They blend traditional flavors with modern techniques, resulting in dishes that are both familiar and exciting. The menu at Phranakhon, one of the best restaurants in York, features a wide range of small plates, from spicy curries to delicate seafood dishes. The lunch deal is especially attractive as you can get some rice, and two other dishes at a much lower price than the a-la-carte options. We really loved how approachable each of the dishes were. While the hero ingredients were the stars of their own shows, the expert balance of sweet, sour, and salt was present in every single item, complimenting each-other and creating a symphony of flavours. My favourite was an incredibly tasty dish called Yam Khai Dao, fried eggs with crunchy vegetables and spicy lime dressing. Even the thought of it makes my mouth water! It was so good that I returned to Phranakhon on our trip to Harrogate and I am happy to confirm that the food was as good as ever.

Shambles Market

If you are missing the hustle and bustle of a farmers’ market or a makers’ market, the Shambles Market is your answer. Open all week long, it does get very crowded during the peak seasons – and it might take you some time to find a bench to sit down on and go at your grub. But finding good grub at the Shambles Market (or the Old Shambles for that matter) will not be a problem. Plenty of vendors with their stalls operate along the food court periphery and we were spoilt for choices. We loved the noodles at NaNa Noodles Bar and the vegan options from Los Moros. Thai Season too was very nice. The burritos at Smokehouse Burrito were totally filling and the crepes at KREP were yummy! Although most vendors accept cards, keeping cash handy as a backup would be prudent. Right off the food court, there are two of best pubs in York where you will find some nice cask ales and beer on tap, Pivni and Valhalla. Both are housed over multiple stories within 16th century buildings. Excellent ambience and service as well. Valhalla has gone a step further and has made the whole pub Viking themed – really adds to the atmosphere! Shambles Market reminded us of the Kirkgate Market, one of the best places to visit in Leeds especially if you have to eat.

TIP: The York railway station has The York Tap on the platform, which is also a fantastic waiting room. Reach the station early just so that you can grab a pint here!

Sparks* CIC

If you are looking for a place to wind down away from the crowd, Sparks* CIC is a great place. While it’s slightly away from the city centre, it makes up for that by being a bustling hub for a myriad bunch of food vendors. The open-air space on the first floor is perfect for those long summer evenings, whereas come winter the ground floor section is your best bet. We recommend the delicious buttermilk fried chicken burgers from Clucking Oinks, the grilled delectables from Vovo Canteen, and Sasa for some Greek style street food. We were also very surprised to see Sarras, a Gujarati street-food shack that was doing brisk business. We especially liked The Outpost and Piccadilly Tap for their impressive collection of local beers on tap, served cold and crisp. Plenty of vegan options were spotted as well. Sparks* is not just a glorified food court though, it also houses multiple community initiatives (an urban aeroponics farm that specialises in micro herbs for example) and popular self-care ventures (think reflexology and deep tissue massages). Sparks* seems to have managed to carve out a niche space for itself, and the support from the locals is visibly encouraging. A great place to catch the sunset and have a drink with your friends.

York Restaurant Recommendations

Roots

On the list of places that we absolutely wanted to visit but couldn’t get a reservation, was Roots. Roots is a Michelin starred restaurant on the bank of river Ouse that focuses on farmed ingredients and locally sourced ingredients caught our fancy. It is voted by many connoisseurs as one of the best places to eat in York. Roots offers testing menus and is on the more expensive side but looked like the ideal place to splurge.

Skosh

Another place that we were really keen on, but did not manage to fit in our schedule was Skosh. Another Michelin starrer, that has been making the right waves in the York food scene with its modern British cooking. We were especially enamoured by the extensive wine list, and their eclectic set of cocktails.
