Often overlooked by travellers, Serbia packs a punch. It is a country of contradictions where the modern and the ancient convene daily. Lofty Art Nouveau masterpieces stand shoulder to shoulder with Brutalist behemoths. In the broad streets of Belgrade, rickety trams rattle past wine bars and shiny cafes.
Serbia’s history, as is the history of the entire Balkans, is marked by decades of turbulence and conflict. The country lies at the borders of the erstwhile Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires, straddling the east-west divide of modern civilization. This has been a convergence point for Islam, Orthodox Christianity, and Roman Catholicism, alongside the clash of ideologies between socialism and capitalism.
Today, Serbia is a bustling modern republic where on a day, you can marvel at frescoes dating back hundreds of years, then spend the next indulging in the excesses of Serbian food and drowning the night in rakija and music. It defies expectations in the most brilliant ways!
“I went to Belgrade not expecting anything – the decorations, the sights, not even the joy or anything interesting – and now I am a victim of its seductive charm, and I have to leave it with utmost pain. This is a new feeling: to fall in love with a city.“
Herbert Vivian
