Sikkim is perhaps our favourite corner of India. In Sikkim, we have found some of the country’s most gorgeous landscapes and some of the warmest, most friendliest people. We have woken up to days bursting with sunshine, hiked in forests ablaze with rhododendrons, sipped chang around a fire, and been at peace.
Travel slowly in Sikkim. Stay at homestays in Sikkimese villages and admire the scenery. Try the local cuisine, an interesting blend of Tibetan, Nepali, Bhutanese, and Indian influences, that is so different from that of the rest of the country. Most trips will start in Gangtok, the chic capital, before winding through the mountains to the west, east, north, or south of the state. North Sikkim is crowned with icy mountains. It is the home of the revered Gurudongmar Lake. In West Sikkim, the former capital, you can explore ancient monasteries on the Monastic Trail and hike at some of the best homestays in the region. Venture south in the tea gardens, then travel east via the old Silk Route that will take you past the Indo-Chinese border at Nathu-La and bring you to the plains of West Bengal.
Come pray in the ancient monasteries that dot this land and explore its scenic trails that lead to snowy mountains and glacial lakes.
