You think Rajasthan, you think royalty. Grand forts and magnificent palaces grace the sands of Rajasthan. No matter where in Rajasthan you go, be in Udaipur or Jodhpur, Jaisalmer or Ajmer, massive forts built by the Rajputs to defend the region crown the skyline. Many of Rajasthan’s palaces are now luxury hotels while others continue to serve as private homes. Most are open to the public for tours.

This is also the state of epithets: Jaipur is India’s pink city, Udaipur is the white city, Jodhpur is the blue city, and Jaisalmer is the golden city. But if you think you have seen all the colours out there, travel to Sekhawati where the havelis are adorned with colourful hand-painted frescoes that have stood the test of time.

Besides exploring the grandiose architecture, you can also go on a wildlife safari or birdwatching at Sambhar Lake or at Bharatpur, visit the annual camel fair at Pushkar, spend a few days in the desert around Jaisalmer or Bikaner, eat twice your weight in Rajasthani food, learn a traditional craft, or load up on trivia such as the marble that was used to built the Taj Mahal was quarried in Makrana or that 25,000 black rats that fed daily at the Karni Mata Temple.

Rajasthan is best explored on a road-trip. The highways are some of the best in the country! But our preferred mode of seeing this part of India is by train and the extensive network of Indian railways does not disappoint!
